Lowndes Grove is one of our favorite places to photograph a wedding in Charleston. It has a 1786 manor house, old oaks, a wide lawn running down to the Ashley River and a dock that stretches out over the marsh. If you’re planning a Lowndes Grove wedding, this guide covers what we’ve learned there: where the best photos happen, when the light is best, what to do if it rains and how to build a timeline that gets you the photos you want. Comparing venues? Start with our roundup of the 20 best Charleston wedding venues.
The private dock runs about 700 feet out over the water, and it’s the spot most couples remember. Walking out gives you long, clean lines, open sky and the river on every side. It’s our first stop for sunset portraits. Leave a few extra minutes in the timeline for the walk out and back.
The lawn faces west over the river, so the evening sun sits right over the water. The old oaks around it give soft shade for family photos earlier in the day and frame portraits beautifully later on.
The house has a three-story spiral staircase, one of the best indoor spots in Charleston. We use it for a bridal portrait looking down from above, and for wedding party photos on a hot or rainy day.
The piazza wraps the second floor and looks out over the grounds. It’s great for getting-ready photos with natural light, a quiet first look or a bird’s-eye view of the ceremony.
The first floor has a sitting room, a parlor, a dining room and a glass-enclosed portico. With period furniture and lots of window light, these rooms are made for detail photos: invitations, rings, shoes and florals.
If you add The River House, its French doors open onto a brick patio under oaks strung with lights. It’s a lovely, relaxed backdrop for groom and groomsmen photos.
Because the lawn and dock face west over the Ashley River, Lowndes Grove has some of the best sunsets of any Charleston venue. The light is warmest in the last 45 minutes or so before sunset. In Charleston, sunset ranges from about 5:15 p.m. in December to about 8:30 p.m. in late June, so check the exact time for your date.
Our tip: plan 15–20 minutes of sunset portraits on the dock, and choose the dress and veil knowing it may be breezy by the water.
The standard rental covers a four-hour event, so the timeline is tight and worth planning around the light. Here’s what we recommend:
Charleston weather changes fast, especially in summer. Most large Lowndes Grove receptions are held in a tent on the Grand Lawn, which already works as cover. For ceremonies, talk through your rain plan with your planner and the PPHG team early. When it does rain, we move portraits to the spiral staircase, the glass portico and the covered piazza, and we always bring clear umbrellas. Stormy skies over the river can make some of the most dramatic photos of the day.
Pricing depends on the season, the day of the week and your guest count. Peak season runs March through June and September through November. Recent listings show a property rental fee of about $3,000 to $14,000, a food and beverage minimum of about $8,000 to $22,000 on Friday through Sunday dates, and a 23% service charge, plus the tent, rentals and other vendors. A licensed, pre-approved planner is required. Prices change, so contact PPHG for current rates.
