As a Charleston elopement photographer, we have the privilege of documenting some of the most tender, unfiltered moments in people’s lives — and this Spanish moss elopement in Charleston, SC was no exception. Gathered with a small circle of their closest people, the glowing bride wore a strapless lace gown with a chapel-length train as she said “I do” to her groom in his crisp navy blue suit. South Carolina’s iconic moss-draped live oaks created a breathtaking natural cathedral for their intimate outdoor ceremony. The bride’s long brunette locks were styled in soft curls topped with a veil, and she carried a stunning hand-tied white floral bouquet that perfectly completed her look. Every detail was thoughtfully chosen, and the result was pure magic.
After the ceremony, we ventured out for memorable outdoor bridal portraits across Charleston’s most stunning backdrops. The couple made an unforgettable choice: renting a classic white convertible from Whip Dash CHS for the occasion. Cruising through the streets of downtown Charleston in a vintage convertible made for some of the most editorial, joyful frames of the entire day. We moved from the lush, mossy garden hideaway to the grand historic architecture of the Charleston peninsula — two completely different settings that together tell the full story of a city as layered and beautiful as the couples who choose to elope here. All in all, this is a Charleston elopement we will never forget.

Charleston is one of the most sought-after elopement destinations in the American South — and for good reason. The city offers an extraordinary range of settings within just a few square miles: cathedral-like canopies of Spanish moss-draped live oaks, cobblestone streets lined with pastel antebellum homes, the grandeur of Waterfront Park, and hidden garden courtyards that feel like they belong to another century. Whether your vision is an ethereal, romantic outdoor ceremony under the trees or dramatic urban portraits in the historic district, Charleston delivers both — often in the same afternoon. As Charleston-based elopement photographers who have documented dozens of intimate weddings across the Lowcountry, we know every secret corner and golden-hour location this city has to offer. We also travel worldwide for elopements, so whether you’re planning to marry here or dream of a destination wedding somewhere else entirely, we would love to be your photographers.
Planning an elopement in Charleston, SC is more straightforward than most couples expect. Here are the key things to know: First, you’ll need a South Carolina marriage license, which you can apply for at the Charleston County Probate Court. There’s no waiting period in South Carolina, and licenses can typically be obtained the same day. Second, if you want to elope at one of Charleston’s iconic public locations — Waterfront Park, White Point Garden, or along the Battery — no permit is required for small ceremonies, though you’ll want to time your session for early morning to avoid crowds. Private plantation venues and garden estates require booking in advance. Finally, think about the season: spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) offer the most comfortable temperatures and gorgeous natural light, while summer in Charleston is hot and humid. We’ve shot stunning elopements in every season though — even a rainy day can produce the most dramatic, moody gallery you’ve ever seen.
Do I need a permit to elope in Charleston, SC?
For most outdoor public locations in Charleston, small elopements (fewer than 25 guests) do not require a permit. Larger ceremonies, exclusive venue access, or ceremonies in certain parks may require coordination with the City of Charleston. We’re happy to guide you through this as part of our planning process.
How long does a Charleston elopement photography session take?
Most elopement photography packages range from 2 to 6 hours. A 2-hour session is perfect for a simple ceremony and one location. A 4–6 hour session allows for multiple locations, getting-ready photos, and plenty of time for portraits — ideal if you want that Spanish moss ceremony plus downtown Charleston portraits, like the couple in this gallery.
What are the best spots for a Charleston elopement?
Our favorite Charleston elopement locations include Spanish moss-canopied private estates, Waterfront Park, White Point Garden (The Battery), Rainbow Row, the historic French Quarter, and Magnolia Plantation. We also love combining a secluded natural ceremony spot with downtown Charleston for portraits — exactly what you see in this gallery.
