The stunning bride wore a strapless mermaid style gown with a chapel train for her outdoor elopement at Middleton Place Events in Charleston, South Carolina. Her hair was styled in an updo and topped with a veil as she met her groom in his black tuxedo for a first look. They were full of radiant smiles as they posed for portraits. The bride carried a white floral bouquet for the ceremony where Spanish moss draped down from the towering trees overhead as this couple said I do by a nearby pond.
After their nuptials, they mingled amongst the sheep and took a walk along the grounds at Middleton Place Events while we captured portraits of the newlyweds. They shared a single tier white wedding cake with those nearest and dearest to them prior to their exit in a vintage white convertible.

Middleton Place is one of the most breathtaking wedding venues in the entire South, and every time we photograph there, we feel it all over again. The property sits along the Ashley River on 65 acres of America’s oldest landscaped gardens, and the way the light filters through the live oak alleys in the late afternoon is unlike anything else we’ve seen in Charleston. Those towering oaks draped in Spanish moss create a natural cathedral — when a couple walks beneath them toward their first look, the canopy overhead frames every image in a way that’s just impossible to replicate anywhere else.
One thing we always talk to our couples about is the seasonal difference at Middleton Place. If you’re getting married in late March or early April, you’re in azalea season — and there is nothing like it. The azalea hill erupts in every shade of pink, red, and white, and the reflection pools turn the whole garden into a painting. We’ve photographed weddings here during the bloom and the images practically photograph themselves. That said, every season at Middleton Place has its own character. Summer brings lush green growth and dramatic storm light. Fall offers golden tones through the canopy. Even winter has a spare, moody elegance that photographs beautifully in black and white.
For ceremony setup, Middleton Place gives couples real options. Outdoor ceremonies on the azalea knoll or beside the reflecting pool are the most popular — you’re surrounded by the gardens with the Ashley River as your backdrop. The Middleton Place Inn and the Carriage House are available for indoor or tented receptions, which gives us as photographers a mix of settings: the soft, romantic window light inside the Inn, the warm string-light glow of the carriage house, and the open evening sky over the grounds during cocktail hour. We love venues that give us that range, because it means your wedding gallery tells a full story from the intimate to the epic.
A few practical notes if you’re planning a Middleton Place wedding: the grounds are spread out, so we always build buffer time into the portrait schedule for walking between locations. The sheep and other animals on the property make for unexpectedly charming moments — don’t be surprised if we sneak in a candid while the flock wanders past. Golden hour hits the oak alleys around 6:30-7pm in summer and earlier in fall, and it’s worth staying for. If you’re considering Middleton Place for your wedding day and want to see more of our work there, we’d love to connect. It’s one of our absolute favorite venues in Charleston.
